STANDARD FIVE
School executives will ensure that the school has processes and systems in place for budgeting, staffing, problem solving, communicating expectations and scheduling that result in organizing the work routines in the building. The school executive must be responsible for the monitoring of the school budget and the inclusion of all teachers in the budget decisions so as to meet the 21st century needs of every classroom. Effectively and efficiently managing the complexity of every day life is critical for staff to be able to focus its energy on improvement.
5A. School Resources & Budget
The school executive establishes budget processes and systems which are focused on, and result, in improved student achievement.
Budget Project
During my time at NC State, we were provided with a budgeting and human resources class. During the spring we assessed the 2016-2017 budget and school improvement plan for Benson Middle School. Our job was to take a deep data dive, see what their needs were, and create a plan using the school budget to improve the school. Within our research, we looked at the school's budget, the SIP, EOG data, and TWC surveys. With this data, we created a budget proposal with examples as to why we chose to distribute money to the programs we proposed.

School Budget PD
During my time at SouthWest all assistant principals took courses based around school budget provided by our HR officer in the county Dr. Mark Whitchard. These professional development sessions are essential to a first year principal. It is very important to understand the 3 different funding sources, the importance PR codes, and how to allocate funds. |

5B. Conflict Management & Resolution
The school executive effectively and efficiently manages the complexity of human interaction so that the focus of the school can be on improved student achievement.
Crucial Conversation with Parent
I had an amazing conversation with a parent involving her student. The conversation did not start out pleasant via phone, but once the parent was able to come to meet with me face to face and she saw all of the options that I made available for her son to be successful prior to our conversation, we were able to find common ground and understanding. She was so pleased after our conversation that she sent me a gift basket filled with chips and candy!

5C. Systematic Communication
The school executive designs and utilizes various forms of formal and informal communication so that the focus of the school can be on improved student achievement.
Bus Sign In
I created a notebook to track incoming and outgoing buses on campus at SouthWest. As the bus coordinator, I understand how important it is able to track the time buses arrive on campus. This also helps me keep bus drivers accountable, on time, and with answering questions, parents may have about late arrival or a missed bus. This also comes in handy when we have to utilize a substitute driver. All bus routes have student’s names besides his/her address and the time they should be picked up in the morning and dropped off in the afternoon. I used an app on my cell phone Synovial to track bus locations to ensure that they were safe and on time. This app was helpful because drivers cannot call you to let you know they are running late, so the app's GPS tracker shows me the exact location of the bus and its routed course.

5D. School Expectations for Students & Staff
The school executive develops and enforces expectations, structures, rules and procedures for students and staff.
Student and Staff Handbook
|
At the beginning of the year, the administration team meets, and the SIT collaborates on student and staff handbook content. We ask our SIT team members to reach out to their departments, create a list of pressing needs, and what they would like to see change for next year. The SIT team addresses the pressing needs, creates a plan to achieve these goals, delegate tasks, and proceeded to create the handbook. By giving teachers a voice in the creation of the handbook, we were able to garner teacher support of the expectations and build more awareness of what the expectations were. This allowed our team to fully internalized and own the expectations and led to less follow up needed from the administration.

Freshman Orientation.
In the spring we invite our feeder pattern middle schools' rising 9th graders to join us for a presentation on what they can expect at the high school level. I had the privilege of addressing the freshman discussing topics such as general registration, bus information, sports, clubs, student activities, and special trips offered.
